THE ULTIMATE 3 DAY PACKRAFTING EXPERIENCE NEW ZEALAND

The Packrafter Experience

Duration: 3 Days (approx.)
Product code: 3days

From NZD$1,099.00

Packrafting is a unique way to experience the very essence of New Zealand’s wilderness and combine hiking and paddling.

Welcome to the ‘real’ world of packrafting! This 3 night trip will give you a first-hand glimpse into what these boats make possible! Our preferred journey will be through the heart of the Darran Mountains via the Hollyford River in Northern Fiordland, travelling over three days to the remote and iconic Martin’s Bay. This trip will demand the same level of paddling skill as the 6 day trip but entails quite a bit less hiking, and includes a fixed-wing flight from Martin’s bay back to Milford Sound on the third day, an amazing way to end the trip.

Note: Our biggest concern as packrafting guides is client safety. As part of this, we reserve the right to alter the itinerary if weather conditions and or group ability makes the Hollyford river option too difficult. In this case, we would instead embark on an equally spectacular trip down the Waiau river and across lake Manapouri for an ascent of the ‘Monument’ over three days. This option will not end with a fixed-wing flight, however, and if it is utilised (at the guides’ discretion), participants will be refunded the portion of their trip cost equivalent to the cost of the flight.

Want MORE?
We have a second three day itinerary available for repeat customers or more advanced paddlers that takes in the first half our or six day expedition. A journey through the heart of the Darran Mountains via the Hollyford River in Northern Fiordland to the remote and iconic Martin’s Bay. This includes a fixed-wing flight back to Milford sound, an amazing way to end an amazing trip.

THE PACKRAFTER 3 DAY EXPEDITION

Day 1: After coffee in town we’ll head to the start of the Waiau River, a few short minutes from Te Anau. We’ll spend the morning learning about the boats and doing some training in the calmer upper sections of the Waiau to make sure everyone is comfortable in the packrafts. We’ll have lunch on the river and run several easy but fun rapids as we make our way to the secluded shallow bay where we’ll either camp or stay in the quaint hut of the same name. Beach combing, bonfires, and swimming are all evening possibilities!

Day 2: Across the lake! We’ll mix walking and paddling today as we make our way from one side of the lake to the other, exploring islands and isthmuses and white sand beaches as we go. You’ll get a good chance to see what the boats are all about today as we’ll be utilising them fully, with several transitions between water and land. Our goal by the afternoon is the Monument, an iconic pinnacle thrusting up out of the lake. For those keen enough (and without a fear of heights) we’ll take a trip to the top to marvel in the view, before finishing the day with a short paddle to Hope Arm and another hut or beach campsite.

Day 3: Day three involves a gorgeous forest walk along classic kiwi trails back towards Manapouri where we’ll pull out the packrafts one more time for a final crossing of the the river.

    EXPEDITION PREPARATION

    Fitness Requirments in short:

    • 15kg – 20kg backpack up to 8 hours
    • Paddling legs of up to 6 hours
    • Reasonable water confidence/swimming ability
    • Medium paddling experience required

On your Packrafter lifestyle trip you might be carrying an approximately 15-20 kg backpack for up to 8 hours a day (mostly 4-6 hours) and some paddling legs may take between 4-6 hours. Your fitness will have a big impact on how much you will enjoy this unforgettable adventure. Even though paddling experience is not essential it will certainly help. We will assess and train you to make sure you are prepared for the challenges ahead.

Nobody, unless carrying a backpack every day, will be used to the different load on your shoulders and you will feel tired after a long day. And for the paddling section on our trips, unless you are paddling on a regular basis, you will feel your muscles burning in the evenings. This is all part of the adventure.

We understand it can be difficult to prepare for a specific adventure, but you should give it a try and we promise you will enjoy this trip even more.

Your goal is to walk with a backpack (around 10-15 kg) at a very easy pace for 2–3 hours. You should start with flat and easy walks and gradually build up to a more hilly terrain.

It can be hard to prepare for the paddling demands unless you actually paddle. If you have the chance, great go for it – if not, replace the paddling sessions with arm strength/core training sessions.

TOP TIP: Wear your hiking boots that you plan on wearing for the trip on all training walks. This will make sure they are properly worn in and gives you a chance to find any hotspots or blister areas that might need attention. Appropriate socks are as important as shoes if we talk blisters.

    WEATHER

The Four Seasons day can happen in New Zealand – Be Prepared.

The weather in New Zealand can be very unpredictable and change dramatically, very quickly; Saying this the weather pattern are usually more stable throughout winter. Most of our overnight trip will be going either close to or into the Fiordland National park which is one of the wettest places on the planet.

Summer months average around 20°C but the evenings can be a little cooler. Winter temperatures average around 10°C on the coast with the evenings much colder. It is not unusual to experience both summer and winter conditions and temperatures on the same day!

It is important to be prepared for the worst conditions carry the appropriate clothing at all times. In the event of extreme weather your safety is our priority and parts of the day may need to be changed. Any decision to do so is a professional decision made by your guide, please respect their decision as it is based on experience and with your safety in mind.

Regardless of the conditions you experience, sun, rain, snow, a combination of the three, or anything in between, your experience on our overnight trip will leave you hungry for more.

    PRE DEPARTURE BRIEFING

Whilst we will send you all the information you need to prepare for this expedition, we also conduct pre-departure briefings the evening before your departure, which you are required to attend.

Pre-departure briefings provide an opportunity to meet the other guests in your group, with whom you will be spending the next six days, and will cover the details you will need to know for your departure the following day. We will also check your personal gear to make sure you have the appropriate equipment for the expedition, itinerary breakdown, supply food and any shared items like tents, stoves and emergency items. This is also the opportunity to ask any questions and to pick up any extra items you may need e.g backpacks, drybags etc if required.

Pre-departure briefings are conducted the night before your departure date at 5:00pm in Te Anau.
